Originally bred for hunting and controlling rodents, these creatures make excellent watchdogs and family pets. They are very active, alert, tolerant with children and are not yappers. The typical lifespan for these animals is 15-18 years and most of the time they remain active and lively.

These creatures come in 3 sizes: Standard: 14-23 inches (35½-58½ cm.) in height, Mid-sized: 8-14 inches (20-35½ cm.) in height, and Toy-Height: 8 inches (20 cm.) in height. Also these pets may be coated or hairless and of different body type. The rat terrier dog breed requires training started while they are young puppies.
