As a matter of fact, Rat Terrier clubs and associations see to it that all dogs have a sound personality and are capable of displaying their working qualities. Even pet quality Rat Terriers that do not conform to the official breed standard should be well balanced and healthy. Breeders are encouraged to investigate the background of the parent dogs and base their breeding programs on caring for the breed's welfare.

One of the most important aspects of breeding Rat Terriers is their personality and working qualities. It is estimated that about 20% of Rat Terriers have unstable personality traits and cannot be considered good canine citizens. Using such dogs in breeding programs is out of the question. Hence, it is advised to carefully choose the breeding stock by the means of researching pedigree databases and seeking temperament and health approval in the sire and the dam.
